What are BCAAs?

The abbreviation BCAA stands for “Branched Chain Amino Acids”. The name refers to the special chemical structure of the three amino acids, L-leucine, L-valine and L-isoleucine.
The three BCAAs are among the nine essential amino acids, which means that the body cannot produce them on its own. Accordingly, they must be regularly supplied through food in order to meet the body's needs.
BCAAs are particularly important for our muscles: Firstly, L-leucine in particular is considered to be the initiator of muscle protein synthesis, and secondly, BCAAs can be metabolized directly into energy by the muscles. In total, the three BCAAs make up a full 14-18% of the total muscle protein!
